Caterina Tiazzoldi / Nuova Ordentra is a design firm whose agenda is to develop design tools to face creatively the complexity of today’s cities.

Its principal, Caterina Tiazzoldi, connects advanced digital research in architecture, developed within the context of the Advanced Research Lab, NSU at the Graduate School of Architecture of Columbia University in New York City, with ten years’ experience in the field of retail, industrial and entertainment design.

NON LINEAR SOLUTIONS UNIT - NSU

In a complex-structured city in which the interactions among parts intensify; in which the number of decision makers and cultural scenarios overlap, interconnect, and sometimes collide; in which the temporal dimensions of the citizens are dissimilar; in which local and global, physical and virtual dimensions co-exist, it is necessary to identify a set of design tools which could respond to design complexity. That is why in the last fifteen years, architects adopted advanced digital tools such as algorithms, dynamic relationships, parametric systems, mapping, morphogenesis, cellular automata, and bifurcation with broken symmetry.
The motivating hypothesis at the basis of NSU is to consolidate research in the field of complex systems in architecture..

NSU is an advanced experimental research unit situated within the GSAPP at Columbia University. Its purpose is to develop a new sensibility in the approach to architectural design that would lead to the architect’s heightened control of an increasing level of complexity in the design process. NSU design agenda is to develop design tools to face creatively the complexity of today’s cities.
The NSU is an interdisciplinary network for both academic research and implementation of non-linear devices in design and construction. The unit works in developing concrete case studies taken from existing problems in architecture. NSU has been invited to develop projects for various exhibitions, conferences and events such as the Salone Satellite Salone del Mobile, Torino World Design Capital 2008. NSU will introduce a new reality where cutting‐edge technology, advanced digital tools, creativity and excellence combine to transform our daily lifestyle.

Parametric Furniture
This project explores the connection between advanced computational design techniques and the engagement of reality in the production of a piece of architecturally embedded furniture. Processes I explore how contemporary modes of digital design to production including parametric exploration, performative design, solid modeling, computer numerically controlled fabrication and material studies contribute in the setting up of a flexible design strategy responding to the needs of nowadays customers. The skill to craft material has traditionally been the realm of expression of individuality in the design process. Through the use of more direct forms of simulation this has become easier to engage, but had removed the physicality of craft from the process. Contemporary involvement in CNC and parametric techniques has facilitated the potentials of the user to become more involved in the process while simultaneously collapsing the traditional designer and craftsperson duality.
